Organizational networks share information and hopefully help avoid double coverage. Specialized databases convey information across jurisdictions for the purposes of law enforcement efforts.

Specialized and separate criminal justice databases exist because they were independently developed for different purposes by different agencies. For example, DNA databases began with states and only recently became nationally search-able. Criminal records were stored state by state, and were not originally collated or search-able. And federal crime records were in federal databases, not always accessible to state law enforcement.

Other than purely being used as a resource, the networks and databases of the criminal justice system can supply information for the protection of individuals by providing them with knowledge.
