An exhaust gas recirculation sensor detects if exhaust gas is being recirculated during engine warmup to reduce emission while the motor is running cold. If the sensor has gone bad, then the OBD or OBDII system will give a code through the OBD plug under the steering wheel and will trigger hte check engine light..

Take off the tube leading to the EGR valve, once removed there should be a fair amount of suction from the tube. Leave the tube off and the engine should still start and run. If the engine dies replace the EGR valve.

Depending upon if the EGR valve is vacumn operated or electronic. For the vac operated system press upwards on the bottom and depress its inner disk. If the idle stumbles the valve works. Electronic valves require a scanner.

A By using a vacuum source and a multimeter you can see if it is working. Take base readings with the meter, apply vacuum to the diaphragm and retest with a multimeter. These EGR sensors don't fail often, carbon buildup on the EGR pintle is usually the culprit.

This part can only be acurately tested with a scanner or diagnostic computer. It will give you the codes to determine if the sensor is bad.
