This is a general procedure, so you may want to check for your car specifically. But you'll need a timing light. Aim it at the crankshaft pulley, and turn distributor.

In a car with a distributor the timing is set by turning the distributor. On way advances it wheel the other retards it. Be sure to disable the vacuum advance.

You need a timing gun, and you need to mark the settings of your timing belt and time it to your gun, most come with instructions. This is not a job for a novice, advancing and retarding the timing incorrectly will most likely result in serious engine damage and failure.

The best thing to do when you are setting the timing on an escort is to get a timing light and make sure you mark the chain. You will then look for the notch and you are going to need someone to help you to keep turning the key for you.

First put the car in neutral. Set idle speed. Disconnect the "FLOW" plug from the distributor harness. take a timing light and scan the crankshaft pulley to see what the timing is. Twist the distributor to advance or retard the timing.

there is not a real way to set the timing, just make sure you line up the marks on your camshaft and crankshaft when you install the belt

If your car has a distributor then you will need to set it with a timing light. Loosen the distributor and remove the vacuum advance line. Then use the light to set the proper time listed by the manufacturer.
