When selling a sitcom, one of the first things you need to do is to get your television idea "copyrighted" - this can be easily done through the Library of Congress. Secondly, contact an entertainment attorney to assist in protecting your production rights and to also assist in the negotiation of contracts.

To sell a sitcom idea you can try getting a meeting with a television broadcasting company by phone call or via email. Usually you have to know someone to make these sort of things happen.

The first step is to make sure your sitcom idea is protected - you can do this by registering your idea with the Library of Congress. Secondly, you will also need an agent to shop your ideas to television networks and an entertainment attorney to represent you in legal negotiations.

As with most How To related questions I would suggest a few things: First do some research, if you're going to do something yourself make sure it's as good as it would be otherwise, else just have someone else do it for you. Secondly, I would suggest purchasing a How-To-Book.

You first need to write a spec script for the idea. You will then need an agent to submit the script to the networks. If the script is sold, you would either be paid for the script or possibly asked to rewrite it. If that happens you get paid more.
