Use a circular saw with a fine cutting blade. The fine cutting blade will prevent chipping and breaking of the Formica.

Start by tracing the design you intend to cut out on the formica. Next take a saber saw to cut the pattern out about 3/8" larger then the pattern. Cut the formica and glue down on desired surface. Then use a router but to make formica flush with surface. Remove any sharp edges with a flat file.

You can use s circular electric saw. You will two people to help you hold the formica in place, otherwise the top will move around and you will get an uneven cut. Also to trim the edges, they do sell trims to match the pattern you get. This can be done with a hot iron and a fast dry adhesive.

Take the formica, lay it down on a workbench, then outline pattern needed to be cut. Use a sabre saw, with fine tooth blade. Proceed.

You will need two power tools. A circular saw with a thin kerf (cut slot width) carbide blade and a jig saw. The circular saw is for cutting the bulk off the counter up to the wall; your jig saw will finish up neatly without damaging the wall. Make sure to take careful measurements.

Formica is cut with a very thin circular saw blade, the easiest tool to use is the Rotozip which is available at many hardware stores.
