Question by  KateAndHannah (5)

Can you stop toxemia in guinea pigs?

My guineapig Peach recently had babies. Due to having so many (5) this has brought on Toxiemia. :'( We have been giving her a syringe of sugery water once a day to help her blood suger rise. (Toxiemia lowers blood suger levels all the time. )

Veterinarians are professionals in treating toxemia in all types of animals. If you are certain the guinea pig has toxemia, take her litter away and hand raise the babies with a bottle and take the mother to a vet.

Take her to an exotics vet (one with experience in rodents, not an ordinary cat/dog vet) ASAP. Toxemia is very dangerous if left untreated. Sugar water once per day is NOT ENOUGH. Also - accidents happen, but do not breed guinea pigs. There is a 20% fatality rate in all pregnancies and you are contributing to overpopulation.

I think the fact that she is still alive is the best thing in your favor- she should have died by now. Keep her very well hydrated.

Take Peach to a qualified exotics vet or emergency clinic IMMEDIATELY. Only a vet that has trained in rodent care will be able to diagnose things properly and prescribe the proper course of treatment to save her.
