Can you keep a male and a female hamster in the same cage?

You can, but your female hamster will soon be pregnant! She will have her babies in a few weeks, but the male hamster is likely to eat them. It could be entertaining, but if you think not, best to separate them.

Unless you want them to breed, it is not recommended to keep opposite sexes in the same cage. If you do wish to breed, it is best to keep them separately and only introduce them for the mating process. Hamsters are solitary animals and does not share space well, except when they are sibling of the same sex.

Can you keep them together? Absolutely. Is it a good idea if you DON'T want baby hamsters? No! The only way to keep hamsters from mating is by keeping them in separate cages. It's the best idea all around.

I asked about this recently in a pet shop and they fat out refused to sell me two if they were going to be kept they fight to the death.
