Start by getting the hood open from underneath the car by jimmying the hood latch from the bottom. Then inpect the cable for place where it could be pinch or could be binding. the lubricate the cable itself inside the protective sleeve until it works smoothly.

I had found that earlier, and it actually helped me understand what was going on. I've never had to delve under the proverbial Vista/7 audio "hood" before. CannotResolveSymbol:I had thought about that earlier but didn't mention it. Neither of those were the right "beep" and changing the sound effects scheme didn't make any difference.

Most hood release units are a simple hook and latch mechanism. Check to see if the latch portion has been bent, this can be straigtned with vise grip pliers.

Primary latch hooks to cable that leads to release in vehicle. Cable could break or springs in latch could break. Secondary latch could have broken spring.
