Depending on the age of the bmwi you might want to change the transmission fluid so that it does make a funny noise. The noise may be because the fluid is dirty and has a lot contaminents in it. If that does stop the funny noise you might want to try pressing in the clutch when canging gears.

Without hearing it it's hard to diagnose. A hum or whine will most likely be the planetary gears inside the transmission. A grind or popping on corners could be a CV joint going bad. It could also be a heat shield that's come loose.

First, check the transmission fluid level. Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface, and the engine is not cold. Transmission fluid naturally expands when warm, so you want to see the fluid in it's driving state. Add fluid if necessary using a funnel through the dipstick tube until it is at an acceptable level.
