My daughter was diagnosed bipolar at 13. She was experiencing extreme mood swings. She was either extremely happy or extremely sad. She is now 31 and still suffering with the disease. She has been on may different medications since she was 13. She handles life better when she takes medication.

No, 16 is not too long for symptoms of bipolar disorder to begin appearing. Explain your concerns to your son's physician, and the doctor can recommend a psychiatrist for your son to see. The psychiatrist will evaluate your son to see if he is bipolar and then may prescribe some medication to help ease the symptoms.

Yes it is possible for him to be diagnosed as bipolar. Bipolar has been found to have been passed on genetically so if it runs in the family, then he may have it. It's not good to jump to conclusions though, I would recommend having him see a professional first. Most insurance plans will cover some counseling.

People of any age can exhibit signs of mental health issues, but some disorders are not officially diagnosed until adulthood. 16 is typically old enough for a bipolar diagnosis.
