you should contact your loan provider and they will work with you to settle the debt, change the terms, lenght and interest rate. Any kind of settlement is better for the both of you

You can get free help from the Legal Aid Society, which is usually funded by the State Bar association. First, you need to go to a lawyer to get a referral. When you establish that you cannot pay, he can then refer you to Legal Aid.
