Can I declare bankruptcy for a default judgment?

yes you can, but that will only stop the collection of the default judgment. One year after you get your discharge in bankruptcy court you have to petition to court to have the judgment maked as satisfied or the debt will haunt you if you own property. Try settling first and use bankruptcy as a last resort

As long as you file bankruptcy before they start collection efforts against you. In some places you can even file after they attempt to collect.
