Yes both are usually caused by viral illnesses. Just because you have one does not necessarily mean you will get the other. Both can be treated without the use of antibiotics.

yes ear pain can be caused by a small tube in your ear called the eustacian it fills with fluid and drips down the back of your throat.

The answer is simply yes. Ear, nose and throat are connected in between them. That is why, there is a special branch of doctors who are Ear, Nose and Throat specialists. Infection in the ear may be due to dusting etc. in the ear which may cause soaring in the throat.
