Question by  MThorpe (46)

Are there exercises to help me learn how to take a professional picture?

I would like to have professional looking photos of my kids made for Christmas gifts this year, but can not afford a studio. Is there a book I can read or a course I may take?

The best way to learn how to take photographs well does not come from a book or a course, it comes from practicing over and over.

Yes, any photography book for beginners will give you easy tips to improve your photo skills. And if you don't want to buy a book, google "amateur photo tips".

You should check your local library, there are many books there about photography and technique for taking professional pictures. Colleges also have courses you can take.

Despite the recent proliferation of digital cameras, the basic strategies to make a compelling photograph haven't changed much in the past 100 years: lighting, framing, composition, etc. If money is tight, visit your local library to freely borrow photography instruction books. Save your money for a camera upgrade and tripod.

If you go to your local library, look for the magazine Shutterbug. It has a lot of suggestions, and pictures, of course. Practice with a sleepy cat or dog and test out your lighting and different functions on your camera. Also use a little joke or saying right before taking the picture, those turn out the best, in my opinion.
