Any food can be fattening if you eat too much. Potatoes do not contain a lot of fat, but they are very high in high glycemic index carbohydrates, which more easily turn into fat than other types of carbohydrates. Deep fried potatoes like french fries are, of course, very fattening.

They don't have a lot of fats, but are very high in starchy carbohydrates, which if consumed in large amounts turn to sugar which makes you gain weight.
