Guinea pigs come from South America. They were first domesticated in 5000 BC, by tribes in the Andes Mountains for their meat. Spanish, Dutch and English traders bought them back with them to Europe, where they became popular pets among the wealthy and among royalty.

There are wild cavies in South America - from Colombia/Venezuela to Brazil and northern Argentina. This is where they originated.
