Are camera shops a better place to buy cameras than a mega store?

Yes. While mega stores may be cheaper, small camera shops have the know how to help you find quality goods. I suggest comparative online research and maybe talking to someone at a local small store and if you can find what you want at a mega store, great. I am a photographer and I always get from small shops.

In general they are. There will be a greater variety of cameras and the staff will be more knowledgeable. The mega store may have cheaper prices, however.

A camera shop is a better place for you to buy a camera. If you go to a camera shop to buy a camera chances are that the employees there will have a much better understanding of the products that they sell.

It depends on what type of camera you want to get. The mega stores are good because you'll have access to a wider array of cameras but when you go to a camera shop, you'll be able to get help from someone who can give specialized advice on specific types of cameras such as ones from thirty years ago.
